How to Review a Sound Level Meter Calibration Certificate

A sound level meter calibration certificate checklist should help you decide whether the reported work supports your measurements. Begin with the equipment and test coverage, then review results and any limitations.

A certificate can contain satisfactory results for the tests performed while leaving a function you need unassessed. Read the scope of the work before relying on an overall conclusion.

Match the certificate to the actual measurement chain

Compare the meter, microphone and preamplifier identifiers with the equipment in front of you. Record any cable or accessory configuration relevant to the work. Ask the laboratory to clarify missing or inconsistent identities.

A separately identified acoustic calibrator has its own reference role. Do not assume that a meter certificate also covers the calibrator merely because both items were shipped together. Check each item's reported work.

Compare the test scope with the task

IEC 61672-3:2013 addresses periodic tests for applicable meters and a limited set of key characteristics. A reference to this standard should be read with the stated method, applicable edition and actual results.

List the functions you use. For example, a task may involve a particular level range, frequency weighting or frequency-band analysis. Ask which of those functions the proposed calibration covers before ordering the service.

For accredited work, compare the laboratory's scope with the specific service. ISO/IEC 17025:2017 concerns laboratory competence, impartiality and consistent operation. A statement about a laboratory does not remove the need to review the scope of the work you received.

Use a task-to-certificate review table

Keep error, correction and uncertainty distinct

Read the certificate's sign convention before applying a correction. A reported error and a correction are not interchangeable labels. Ask for clarification if the certificate does not make the intended use clear.

Measurement uncertainty describes information about the dispersion of values attributed to the measurand. It is not a fault allowance that can simply be subtracted from an unfavourable error. The underlying terminology is set out in JCGM 200:2012.

When a conformity statement appears, identify how the decision rule treats uncertainty. Do not replace it with your own convenient arithmetic. If no conformity statement was requested, the absence of a pass label does not by itself mean the calibration is incomplete.

Worked review without invented test results

Hypothetical example: A team uses a meter for overall sound levels and octave-band reporting. Its certificate identifies the meter and microphone and gives results for the listed sound level meter tests. It does not identify tests of the octave-band function.

The reviewer records the missing coverage and asks the laboratory for clarification. Pending that answer, the team does not claim the certificate establishes octave-band performance. It may need additional work or a different instrument for that part of the task.

This review does not declare the instrument defective. It identifies an evidence gap between the work performed and the work intended.

Close the review with a specific decision

Record release for the stated task, release with defined restrictions, or a hold pending clarification. Include the reviewer, date, certificate reference and unresolved actions. Preserve the correspondence that explains any limitation.
