pipette calibration acceptance criteria

pipette calibration acceptance criteria matters when a dispensed volume supports a test, formulation or release decision. A pipette reading is part of a measurement system. The instrument, tip, liquid, operator technique, environment and calibration evidence all contribute to the result.

This guide gives a review framework. It does not assign universal tolerances or replace the applicable manufacturer instructions, laboratory method or customer requirement.

Build an acceptance review table

ItemReview questionRecord
IdentityDoes the certificate identify the pipette and relevant parts?________
Test pointsAre the volume points relevant to the work?________
ResultsAre error, correction and units clear?________
UncertaintyIs the reported uncertainty suitable for the decision?________
Decision ruleWhich requirement supports acceptance?________

Do not treat uncertainty as an automatic allowance added to every result. Read the stated decision rule and sign convention. If the certificate has no conformity statement, review the numerical results against the requirement that governs your work.

Define the measurement task first

Record the nominal volume, working range, liquid, tip type, operating technique and intended decision. Then identify the evidence needed to support that task. A certificate for one volume point does not automatically establish performance across every setting.

Keep calibration separate from adjustment

Calibration establishes a relationship between indications and reference values under specified conditions. Adjustment changes the instrument response. Preserve results obtained before adjustment when they are needed to assess earlier work, and review the equipment again after adjustment.

Record a decision that another person can review

State the equipment identity, evidence reviewed, acceptance basis, restrictions and reviewer. Keep the certificate with the method and relevant use records. If evidence is missing, record the gap and the action required rather than implying coverage.

For the wider calibration context, read the pipette calibration guide and the certificate review article.

Common questions

Does calibration prove every dispensed volume?

No. It supports the tested points and conditions. Use the stated scope to decide whether interpolation or additional evidence is justified.

Can I rely on a pass label alone?

No. Review identity, scope, results, uncertainty and the decision rule that produced the statement.
