When to Review a Sound Level Meter Calibration Interval

A sound level meter calibration interval should reflect the equipment, its use and the requirements of the measurement task. A due-date sticker is useful for scheduling, but it cannot explain why the interval is suitable.

This guide helps you organise an interval review. It does not prescribe a universal annual interval or authorise an extension where a binding requirement sets the timing.

Separate fixed obligations from reviewable choices

Start by listing applicable contractual, procedural and other requirements. Identify whether each statement is mandatory for your work, a manufacturer's recommendation or an internal scheduling choice. Resolve conflicting instructions before changing the programme.

ILAC-G24 / OIML D 10:2022 provides guidance on selecting and reviewing recalibration intervals. It considers equipment history and operating factors, and describes several review approaches. It is guidance rather than a universal timetable for sound level meters.

Build one history for the actual configuration

Bring together calibration certificates, repair records, component changes and field checks. Identify which results relate to the same meter and microphone combination. If a component was replaced, mark that point in the history rather than treating all records as one unchanged system.

Separate observations made before adjustment from results obtained afterwards. Consistent results immediately after adjustment may tell you less about performance between calibrations than the condition found on arrival.

Also record how the equipment is used. A meter kept for occasional indoor work may face different conditions from a frequently transported setup. Describe the actual conditions rather than assigning risk from a label such as laboratory or field alone.

Review early when something material changes

Examples of review triggers include damage, repair, a changed microphone, repeated unexplained check differences or a new measurement task. These events call for assessment. They do not all require the same technical response.

A change of task can matter even when the equipment has not changed. If the new work relies on functions or conditions not covered by the existing evidence, an earlier technical review may be needed before use.

Do not let one stable check represent the whole instrument

Repeated field checks at the same tone provide useful continuity evidence. They do not directly demonstrate the behaviour of every other frequency, level or function. Keep the limited coverage of those checks visible in the review.

Likewise, a history with missing records is not a history of confirmed stability. Note the missing evidence and decide whether more observations are needed before changing the interval.

Two illustrative decisions

Hypothetical case one: A meter has comparable laboratory results and consistent field-check records, but a customer procedure fixes the calibration timing. The team retains the required timing and uses the history to support its equipment review.

Hypothetical case two: A meter has begun travelling between sites and has several unexplained check incidents. The team investigates the incidents, reviews handling and considers whether earlier calibration or additional checks would address the identified issue.

Neither case supplies a numeric interval. The decision follows the actual requirements and evidence rather than a generic number.

Record the reason for the next due date

State the decision, evidence used, limitations and approval. If an extension is justified and permitted, define what would trigger an earlier review. If you retain the existing interval, record why it remains appropriate.
